Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Community elders in many parts of Nigeria have long played an essential role in maintaining peace and resolving disputes. In Kaltungo LGA, Gombe State, these traditional figures have been key in managing conflicts, from inter-communal disputes to family disagreements. Their influence stems from respect for their wisdom, neutrality, and deep understanding of local customs and traditions. With the increasing challenges of ethnic tensions and resource-based conflicts, the role of community elders in conflict mediation remains critical. This study will examine the ways in which community elders engage in conflict resolution in Kaltungo, assessing their methods and the effectiveness of their interventions in fostering long-term peace.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
While the role of community elders in conflict resolution is recognized in Kaltungo, there is limited empirical research on the effectiveness of their mediation efforts in the face of modern security challenges. The study seeks to understand the extent to which these traditional mechanisms contribute to peacebuilding, as well as the challenges faced by elders in resolving conflicts in the contemporary context, especially given the growing influence of external actors like politicians and security forces.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of community elders in mediating conflicts in Kaltungo.

  • To identify the strategies and approaches used by community elders in conflict resolution.

  • To assess the challenges faced by community elders in carrying out their mediation roles.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How effective are community elders in mediating conflicts in Kaltungo?

  • What strategies do community elders employ in conflict mediation?

  • What challenges do community elders face in conflict resolution?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • H₀: Community elders are not significantly effective in mediating conflicts in Kaltungo.

  • H₁: Community elders play a significant role in mediating conflicts in Kaltungo.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the role of traditional conflict resolution mechanisms in contemporary Nigerian society. The findings will inform policy makers, local leaders, and development practitioners on how to strengthen the capacity of community elders in peacebuilding, fostering community stability in Kaltungo and similar regions.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Kaltungo LGA, Gombe State, with an emphasis on the mediation of conflicts by community elders. Limitations may include challenges in accessing the community elders due to traditional norms or reluctance to participate in formal studies.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Community Elders: Respected individuals in the community who are often relied upon to mediate disputes based on their knowledge of local customs and wisdom.

  • Conflict Mediation: A process in which a third party, such as a community elder, helps disputing parties reach a mutually acceptable resolution.

  • Peacebuilding: Activities aimed at preventing conflict, promoting dialogue, and fostering stability within communities.
